Tips on Managing Relationship Lines in WS - Part II

Hello,

Our series about relationship lines in Toad Data Modeler continues. Today I’d like to write about creating relationship lines and adding shortcuts of relationships to new or already existing workspaces.
See below some situations (taken from often asked questions) and possible solutions. More screenshots will be presented today.

Enjoy!

CREATE A RELATIONSHIP

Situation A:
I need to create several non-identifying relationships.

1. Press SHIFT and click the Non-identifying Relationship icon. A blue frame will appear in the icon.
2. Create as many relationships in you model as you need. To turn this function off, right-click the work area (or click the Relationship icon again).

Situation B:
I need to define a track for the relationship line on my own while I create the relationship. (Not satisfied how TDM adds relationships automatically.)

1. Add break points while you are creating the relationship. -> Click the parent entity and define the track by clicking the work area in particular places. This way you add as many break points as necessary.
2. Finally click the child entity.
See the result for:

a) Right Angled Mode:

Tip! - If there are more unnecessary break points in a line segment, feel free to remove them. -> Right-click the relationship and select Reduce Breakpoints.

b) Straight Mode:

Tip! - Right-click the line and select Change Line to Right Angled for much better appearance of the line. Then you can use the Reduce Breakpoints option too.

Situation C:
I’ve created a relationship in a standard way – clicked parent and then child entity. See the result:

In Right Angled Mode:

a) Example A:

Possible solution:
Press ALT key, hold it down, select the line segment and move it by the drag and drop techniques or via the keyboard arrows.
Note: This option works only for angled lines however, in both Straight and Right-angled modes.

b) Example B:

Possible solution:
Add break points on the line and move the particular line segment (holding ALT key).
Note: In Right Angled mode, it is not possible to move break points, but only selected line segments.

In Straight Mode:

Possible solution:
Add break points on the line and move them. Feel free to move also the selected line segment.

ADD SHORTCUTS OF RELATIONSHIP LINES

Situation A:
I’ve created a new Workspace and need to add some entities to it, including their relationships.

1. Right-click in the new Workspace and select Complete from Model.
2. In the Model Complete dialog, enable only the Links button.
3. Select relationships that you like to add to the WS. Entities connected by the selected relationship will be added to the WS automatically. (In the Object1 and Object2 columns, you will see the table names.)
4. Confirm OK.

Situation B:
I’ve created a new Workspace and added shortcuts of entities to the new WS. Now I need to additionally add relationships to some of these entity shortcuts.

Right-click the selected entity and select Fill Parent Objects, Fill Child Objects or Fill Parent and Child Objects. The relationship lines will be added at once.
===============

This is all for today. Next time, I will show you some tips for break points and moving relationship lines/line segments/entities/break points.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated! Thanks VERY MUCH for them! (… I would be very grateful to know that somebody’s reading  my post. Thanks. ;) )

Regards,

Vladka
