This week at Citrix Synergy (iForum) Doug Brown of www.dabcc.com did a presentation where he compared VMware VDM2 to XenDesktop. At 18:45 of this video he was asked “who does he think has the best (connection) broker”, to which he answers “I like Provision Networks, I think it’s the best…”

I was sitting in the audience when Doug spoke. Doug also said you are “not going to put your company in tight with quest” at about 19:10. If you are going to quote Dougie, you have to take the good with the bad.

I quoted Doug correctly. The question from the crowd was which broker Doug thought was the best, and I quoted his answer. I did not however quote his opinion of Quest Software (as a whole), which I thought was kind of curious, since most VMware shops use our Vizioncore products, and thousands of companies use our Scriptlogic products. Perhaps I’ll ask him what he was referencing with that comment, or if it was said because he was in front of a bunch of Citrites and Citrix Kool-AID drinkers.
P.S. Thanks for reading our blog.

An intersting response. i did not accuse you of mis-quoting Doug, I only pointed out that you did not quote the negative comment about your company. Your post would have been more valuable had you quoted the good and bad. Sounds like you are getting quite a bit of kool-aid drinking in as well.
If you really think Doug said you had the best broker then backed off and implied your company is a joke because he was at a citrix event, you obviously do not know Doug very well.

You are correct, I do not know Doug (well). We’ve met a few times and corresponded via email, but that’s about it. The most likely reason for his implied ‘tude towards Quest Software, is that he knows about as much about Quest as I did before I investigated working for them (not much). Last November all I knew about Quest was that they were some company in Orange County, California that I would see from time to time, as they have a big headquarters in Aliso Viejo near where I used to live. To my surprise they turned out to be an ~ $800M company with >=3000 employees worldwide and owned some software which I’d actually used before, i.e. Vizioncore and Scriptlogic. The reason I and most Server Based Computing types had no idea who Quest was, is that most of their products revolve around Application, Database and Windows Management, which was just not my focus.

Since Doug is a “Provision Networks Very Important Professional” (according to his website), I am assuming he actually knows something abut your company and its corporate owner. Or does that designation only a marketing tactic and in practice means nothing?

Yes, Doug is a Provision Networks VIP, which means we can share NDA info with him… That being said, he’s familiar with Provision Networks, which was acquired by Quest Software in November of 2007. At that point I had no real idea of who Quest Software was, as I’m sure is common amongst my colleagues. Quest does not have “an owner”, but rather is a publicly traded corporation (QSFT). Since three of the VIPs listed on our website were hired by Quest, we’ll need to open this up to more people, and start doing some more events with them.
